Aug 01, Vavuniya: Sri Lankan Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne this afternoon will open the inaugural agricultural exhibition and the National Farmers’ Week in Vavuniya of the Northern Province.
The first such event in Vavuniya in thirty years will be held until August 5th in the government’s Seed Farm.
During the Farmers’ Week, discussions, awareness programmes, training workshops, sports events and screening of films and many other programmes are to be held.
Over 100 stalls have been set up to display the new agricultural methodology and crop varieties and around 90 companies of the government and private sector will provide farming equipment at affordable prices to the farmers during the Week.
According to the Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena the objective of this programme is to enhance national food security.
Following the opening this afternoon at 4 p.m., the main Farmers’ Week and the fair will be open daily for the public from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
