May 12, Colombo: Ceylon Teachers’ Union has written to the President’s Secretary Lalith Weerathunge to look into the decision of sending 19 education officials of the North Central Provincial Education Department for a tour in Thailand.
The union points out that the tour costs Rs. 11 million of public money from the cash strapped department that has restricted allocations for many essential education needs of the students.
A spokesman of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union further said that 11 of these 19 officials were acting in the administrative positions without proper appointments or qualifications. He said that the Ministry had already called applications for a competitive examination to recruit qualified persons to replace the acting officials.
The Union queried the rationale behind sending such officials on foreign tours whilst the measures had been taken to replace them and urged the Presidential Secretary to stop the waste of public money.
