June 11, Colombo: The Poson festival that marks the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka by Arhath Mahinda Thero in Indian Emperor Asoka’s time is beginning now and the police say that a 4000-strong police cadre will be deployed for security in Anuradhapura where the main festival is held.
Jayantha Gamage, the Deputy Inspector General of North Central Province said that uniform and civil clad police officers would be deployed in the city. Special lifesaving police squads will be deployed near the reservoirs where people bathe.
The Chief Minister of the North Central Province Berty Premalal Dissanayake said that 20 schools of the province would be closed to provide facilities to police and other officials on duty during Poson pilgrimage. The schools will be closed for six days from June 13 to 18.
Ministry of Transport says that special bus and train services are scheduled for the benefit of the pilgrims.
